World Health Organization Raises Concern Over Acute Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, more than two billion will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidance recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with thorough and continuous support," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to widespread access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, says the agency.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Despite the current most favorable case, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The recommendation calls on countries and companies to widen availability, via approaches such as licensing agreements.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

The injections imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and increase satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

People commonly see weight reduction in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence points to patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of stopping the treatment, as their typical appetite resume.
